Visiting a Senior Center is a great way to get out of the house and to meet new friends. There are a host of activities to choose from at Senior Centers. If you are on the web you may want to access the Center's calendar of events which outlines a host of activities for the month, or call, or call and ask the representative about upcoming calendar events.
I am a member of the Emeryville Senior Center at 4321 Salem St. in Emeryville, CA. This year's Black History Month program was absolutely fantastic. In past years I was told that Emeryville's Senior Center produced spectacular Black History events, so this year 2019 was my chance to witness such an event.
"The Great Migration"
Mother Lillian Edward a 99-year-old Senior was the keynote speaker. She was dressed in a long blue robe-like dress with an apron at her waist, and she said this is how my mother dressed on a daily basis along with a white scarf as a headdress. Mother Edward story took us to a time in her life when people worked very hard to exist, she said her father worked daily to make sure his wife and children were able to have the very things they needed to exist.
Mrs. Lillian spoke about her family's migration experience from Texas to California.
After the presentation, we had a sumptuous meal consisting of baked chicken, collard greens, cornbread, potato salad, and mac n cheese. We had a refreshing cranberry drink and lemon water and our dessert was a slice of delicious pound cake.
Following our meal, there was a raffle. Everyone who attended the event was given a raffle ticket which allowed them to go to the raffle table loaded with beautiful gifts and to select which item they choose by dropping their ticket in a container which was to be selected from once the raffle started. This was a great way to speed up the raffle process and everyone who won a gift was very pleased.
I was very impressed by the organization and professionalism of the Emeryville Senior Center staff with the production of this event. Needless to say, February 2020 if the Good Lord willing, my to do list is set to attend another Black History event at the Emeryville Senior Center.
